Question 1 – Would you vote in favour of the current transit plan?
Corry Burke – Did not respond
Richard Cannings – Did not respond
Peter D. Clark – Did not respond
Harley Collison – No. Why? As for our future Transit of LRT, we will need to approach this with a better frame of mind. A downtown tunnel may be a good idea on the surface because of its many pluses for the economy. Businesses will be setup underground and will further add to our overburdened tax base we have available at this time. However, we must think about cost of this endeavor. The estimate currently for the tunnel is $875,000,00, however others claim we are looking at 2.1 billion or 2.5 billion. Which is it? And knowing how the city deals with estimates it will suffer the same scope creep the estimate on voice stops in the articulated buses. Then there is security costs associated with tunnels not currently estimated in the phase plans. Tunnels tend to be a haven for drug dealers, sexual assault, robbery, and in some cases, murders. I draw…*
Rawlson King – YES. A well managed, easily accessible public transportation system attracts workers into cities, brings commuters to and from work, and moves goods from where they are produced to where they are consumed. We know that congestion negatively impacts the quality of life in Ottawa by decreasing personal and business productivity, lowering air quality and creating noise pollution. We also know that the financial impacts of inefficient transportation systems are considerable. A systematic analysis of the cost of urban traffic congestion by Transport Canada found that recurrent congestion in urban areas costs Canadians between $2.3 billion and $3.7 billion per year. More than 90 per cent of this cost is associated with the time lost in traffic to drivers and passengers; seven per cent occurs because of fuel consumed; and three per cent is from increased greenhouse gas emissions. Specifically, in the Ottawa-Gatineau region, the maximum cost of congestion was estimated…*
Maurice Lamirande – Answer: No. Yes we need Light-Rail, but if we are talking about the plans for a transit tunnel, I have many issues with this idea, notably the potential that it may become a hot spot for criminality. However, there have been interesting ideas lately regarding an above-ground light rail network. This would be a much less costly and lengthy process in terms of city-wide implementation. This seems to make much more sense for our city.

Question 2 – Working on council requires working with people of differing political views and outlooks. What experience would you bring that would allow you to be effective in working with those of differing views than your own. How would you describe your approach in dealing with people with different viewpoints?
Corry Burke – Did not respond
Richard Cannings – Did not respond
Peter D. Clark – Did not respond
Harley Collison – Your question describes exactly what is wrong with City Hall. Because of opposing views which are based purely on socialism and conservatism it has polarized and over politicized Council since amalgamation. This is why bus strikes happen, stupidly reigns over things like cow signs and trees interfering with one’s foundation and lawsuits. The best way to deal with those with views points (assuming those points are from a right or left perspective) is to expose it. We don’t need left and right politics, we need common sense, honesty and integrity, but most important, transparency.
Rawlson King – Rawlson King is the only person in Ward 13, Rideau-Rockcliffe race who is not a career politician, or perennial candidate, or a member of slate, or an activist, or a former political aide. Often these type of politicians create division or only represent narrow, specific community interests. We had a preponderance of these types around the last Council table, and all regular residents got in return was gridlock and inertia, which stalled our progress towards building a better Ottawa. As the only non-aligned or non-career politician and regular resident in the race, I feel I can address any issue without ideology, without partisanship, and with less focus on narrow ward interests, and make decisions outside of the lens of political opportunism. I am the only candidate with private sector experience that specifically focuses on collaboration. As a communication director at an industry association, I have participated in a number of… (150 word limit)
